Tunisia’s marine ecosystem is on its last legs: loss of most of the flagship species due to dangerous fishing practices (trawling, dynamite, overfishing, etc.) that are prohibited by law.

According to Mayssa Mrabet , Afkar’ s incubation manager: “Today, there’s an urgent need to promote and support artisanal fishing structures in Tunisia for a number of reasons, including more sustainable management of natural resources, improving the competitiveness of fishing operators, especially young people and women, and guaranteeing the safety and traceability of fish products for the benefit of consumers”.
According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), there is an alternative: the future of fishing in Tunisia lies with artisanal fishing. Artisanal fishing can contribute to our food security and poverty reduction, and benefit coastal rural development at a time when the artisanal fishing community in Tunisia is sinking deeper and deeper into precariousness.
It is in this context that the Afkar incubator, in partnership with Nemo Kantara, is launching a call for applications aimed at entrepreneurs wishing to invest in artisanal fishing, with the aim of selecting a governance, management and marketing structure for the “Produits de la pêche artisanale du Sud” label, through the “Stabilization and Socio-Economic Development of Tunisia’s Coastal Regions” project financed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI).
For 4 weeks, project leaders will have access to online workshops in “Proposition Value”, “Prototyping and Finance” to perfect their recommendations and prepare effectively for Demo Day, during which they will defend their projects and win financing of 30,000 TND to bring them to fruition.
